Department of Foreign Affairs Student Internship Program

UPDATE (5 January 2017): Pending review of the Department’s policy on Internships at Foreign Service Posts as stipulated in Department Order 15-2015, General Guidelines for the Student Internship Program, the processing of all applications shall be on hold effective immediately and until further notice.

I. Qualifications:

Students who wish to avail themselves of the Department’s Internship Program may apply provided that they meet all of the following criteria:

  1. They should be Filipino citizens (including those with dual citizenship).
  2. They should be currently enrolled in and duly endorsed for internship by an academic institution.
  3. They should be third or fourth year students in an undergraduate program that requires internship.  Students who apply for internship on a voluntary basis may be accepted, depending on the availability of slots.
  4. They should be fit (physically, mentally, emotionally, and psychologically) for internship.

II. Documentary Requirements:

Students who are qualified and who wish to undergo internship shall submit the following documentary requirements:

  1. Application letter that should also enumerate all the documentary requirements that are being submitted together with the application letter.
  2. Endorsement letter from the school signed by the internship coordinator or appropriate authority indicating the name(s) of the applicant(s), required number of hours and other relevant information.  The endorsement letter from the school should also include an Affidavit of Undertaking, taking full responsibility for any work-related injuries or any untoward incident that may happen to the student during their internship period, including repatriation back to the Philippines, should the need arise.
  3. Four 2.54 cm. x 2.54 cm. colored photos to be used for (a) Two copies of Personal History Statement (PHS) forms; (b) One temporary DFA pass; and (c) One for file.
  4. Original and updated NBI Clearance or if the applicant is a resident of the US, Police Clearance from the City or State where the applicant is a resident.
  5. Two (2) duly accomplished Personal History Statement forms (downloadable from http://www.philippineembassy-usa.org/uploads/pdfs/PHS.pdf)
  6. Medical Certificate attesting to the good health of the applicant.
  7. Certificate from a licensed psychologist attesting to the student’s psychological fitness.
  8. Students based in the Philippines and who are accepted as interns at the Embassy are required to submit the following additional documents:
    1. Three (3) notarized copies of signed waiver (Release and Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity, and Parental Consent)
    2. Three (3) original Joint Affidavit of Consent and Support for Travel signed by student’s parent(s) or legal guardian(s)
    3. Certification of prospective address in the US
    4. Three (3) copies of signed confidentiality statement (Form 2)
    5. Notarized copy of passport and appropriate US visa
    6. Three (3) notarized copies of valid travel and international medical insurance policy

III. Internship Program Admission Procedures/Guidelines:

  1. Applicants from the Philippines must directly submit their applications addressed to the Assistant Secretary of Human Resources Management Office (HRMO) of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila.  Those who are residing in the US may address their applications to the Ambassador, Embassy of the Philippines, 1600 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington D.C. 20036.
  2. Applicants shall be wholly responsible for  their own travel documents, such as passport and visa.
  3. Applicants who are accepted as interns shall shoulder their own airfare, accommodation, travel and medical insurance, as well as other expenses related to their internship.
  4. Applicants must submit their applications for internship no less than two (2) months prior to the intended start date of the internship.
  5. Applicants shall be notified in due course whether their applications have been approved or denied.
